International student health insurance Norway

Which student health insurance is required for Norway student visa ?

Non EU/EEA nationals (third country nationals)

Third countries students are those who’s nationality is non European Union or non European Economic Area country.

The access to the Norwegian national health system is depending of the status of the student.

Duration of stay more than 1 year
If you
register as a student at a Norwegian higher education institution for more than 1 year and hold a student residence permit in Norway, you are automatically insured by the Norwegian national health system.

If the duration is 1 year or less
You should organise your health insurance cover from your own side in order to cover the medical costs in Norway.

Necessary and recommended insurance :  A private health and assistance insurance is necessary and recommended for :

1. for obtaining the travel visa to Norway

2. if you are not eligible for Norwegian national health system (example if you study less than 1 year in Norway)

3. for covering the medical costs until you are registered by the Norwegian national health system

4. for taking in charge all assistance benefits necessary during your studies in Norway like :

  • Medical treatments (sickness and accident) not covered by Norwegian national health system
  • Repatriation to your home country
  • Ambulance by air, sea and ground
  • Search and rescue
  • Accidental death and disability benefits
  • Third party liability insurance

EU/EEA Nationals

Students with nationality from EU/EEA countries can request in their home country the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Thanks this card, EU/EEA nationals can benefit of the same cover as Norwegian nationals.

Attention : The EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover any travel protection, search and rescue, repatriation to the home country, emergency dental treatments, assistance… A private insurance is highly recommended.
