Which student health insurance is required for Austria student visa ?

In Austria, you are mandatory and required to take out a health insurance.

If you are national from outside of European Union

If your nationality is other than from the European Union, then you are considered as a third country student.

To study in Austria, you need a student visa (residence permit)

Stays from 1 up to 3 month

You can hold a visa C (Schengen visa) which allowed you to stay in Austria and all Schengen countries up to 90 days within a period of 180 days. An international student health and assistance insurance up to EUR 30'000 insurance sum is sufficient.

Stays from 4 up to 6 month

You can hold a visa D which allowed you to stay in Austria and all Schengen countries up to 90 days and in Austria up to a maximum of 180 days. An international student health and assistance insurance up to EUR 30'000 insurance sum is sufficient.

Stays 6 months and more

If you stay for 6 months and more in Austria, you are required to request a student residency permit "Aufenthaltsbewilligung Studierender" and can request the enrolment in the Austrian national health insurance.

Recommended for studies in Austria in general

An international student health and assistance plan is necessary and highly recommended :
 

1. for obtaining the travel visa to Austria

2. for covering the medical costs until you are registered by the Austrian national health insurance.

3. or taking in charge all assistance benefits necessary during your studies :​
 

• Medical treatments (sickness and accident) not covered by Austrian national health insurance.
• Repatriation to your home country
• Ambulance by air, sea and ground
• Search and rescue
• Accidental death and disability benefits
• Third party liability insurance

​EU/EEA Nationals

Students with nationality from EU/EEA countries can request in their home country the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Thanks this card, EU/EEA nationals can benefit of the same cover as the local health fund.

However, the EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover any travel protection, search and rescue, repatriation to the home country, emergency dental treatments, assistance… A private insurance is highly recommended in Austria also for EU/EEA nationals during the entire stay in Austria.
